The iPhone Duo Could Create a whole New Category of Apps

The iPhone has basically been the same shape for nearly 20 years. A rectangle. One screen. Every app designed around roughly the same interaction model.

The iPhone Duo changes that.

Apple’s first foldable has a 5.4-inch outer screen, a 7.6-inch display when opened, and software designed around different orientations, side-by-side apps and partially folded positions.

That sounds like a hardware upgrade. But it could actually be a new playground for app developers.We’re already seeing the first weird experiments. An indie developer built Duo-Man, an app that turns the Duo into a virtual Walkman. Open the phone to choose a cassette. “Insert” it. Close the phone and the music starts playing. He even recorded real Walkman clicks and cassette static for the experience. What started as a hackathon project went viral and is now being turned into an actual app. source

And that’s what makes the Duo interesting. The opportunity isn't just taking an existing iPhone app and making it wider.

It's asking:

What experiences only make sense when your phone can fold?

A few ideas:

🎮 Nintendo DS-style games
Gameplay on one half. Controls, maps or inventory on the other.

📸 Digital camera mode
Fold it 90°. One side becomes the viewfinder, the other becomes physical-style camera controls.

🎛️ Pocket DJ deck
Tracks on one screen, mixer and effects on the other. Folding the phone could even become part of the interaction.

♟️ Tabletop games
Put the phone partially open on a table and turn each side into a player's private hand, scoreboard or game surface.

📖 Interactive books
Two-page layouts, comics, kids' stories or choose-your-own-adventure experiences that actually feel like opening something.

💻 Tiny laptop apps
Messages or documents on top, contextual controls or an AI assistant underneath.

The early mobile app boom happened because developers eventually stopped trying to recreate desktop software on a smaller screen.

The Duo could create a similar moment.

The interesting question isn't “Which existing apps will support the Duo?”

It's:

What completely unnecessary, delightful, weird little products become possible because this thing folds?

Those might end up being the most interesting apps of all.
